It is metabolized by microsomal enzymes to reactive acid metabolites, which can bind to cellular macromolecules, such as proteins and DNA, and cause reproductive toxicity and cancer. BHT is typically applied to the fat phase of a product at a concentration of 0.01–0.1% and is best used in combination with EDTA. It is for external use only.
